The telephone pole

I had climbed up a ladder to the top of a telephone pole in the High Street. I rested my head on the top rung and fell asleep.
My boss came by, shouted and shook his head.
Another colleague arrived and we swopped places.
He shouted down for an empty tobacco tin from his toolbox, which I duly procured, and he proceeded to lower it down the centre of the pole.
All seemed very reasonable at the time but now not so sure.

The wooden pole with a tube down the middle could represent the urethra. Lowering a tobacco tin down the middle could be connected with medical procedures possibly relating to the past?

In any case were the 'lines down'? a better man had to take your place following instructions from below/above.

No relevant medical procedures come to mind, unless you count that alien abduction time.

I think there is but I wouldn't want to say in such a public place a type of test with a possible suspicion regarded immorality involved 4 letters also an anacronym.
but i know what you're like with crosswords.
